The Challenge: With a membership that included facilities across the state, an industry organization needed a timely, efficient way to communicate legislative news during the General Assembly. Caught off-guard the previous year with a move by lawmakers that would cost the industry millions every year, the organization’s leadership needed to keep its members informed and ready to mobilize as needed.
The Strategy: The CMC team worked closely with the lobbying team to follow the legislative process and news on issues important to the industry. We created an “At the Capitol” weekly newsletter that included short stories on weekly legislative actions, spotlights on key lawmakers, and links and summaries to related news coverage. Working in the organizations membership database and email newsletter platform, we created and distributed an email newsletter every Friday afternoon during the legislation session.
The Outcome: The email newsletters were part of a legislative strategy that raised the organization’s influence with lawmakers and state government leaders. Combined with CMC assistance with other tactics such as media outreach, talking points and guest editorials, the weekly newsletter provided timely information that kept the organization’s membership in-the-loop on key legislative actions. It reinforced the key message that it’s leadership and lobbying team were working hard on their behalf under the Gold Dome. It also provided a summary that guided updates and questions on weekly conference calls with the organization’s board members.
